Aims of the Course Advance training for IPT Practitioners, and supervisor training for those wishing to complete a higher level of accreditation. The course aims to develop advanced skills in group and individual supervision of IPT practice and provide participants with advanced knowledge and theoretical understanding of IPT. The curriculum will provide a competency based format for self-assessment and clinical supervision. It will extend the knowledge and skills of qualified IPT practitioners in the clinical application of IPT across all focal areas and a range of clinical presentations. This course will consolidate IPT practitioner skills and develop knowledge and understanding of the skills required to supervise peers and for accreditation. Trainees will develop skills in evaluating adherence to the IPT model, communicating effectively and constructively on the successful application of knowledge and techniques, and managing and supporting change in non-adherent practice. The module will equip trainees with knowledge and understanding of the importance of communication skills, conceptualization skills, evaluation skills, supporting skills transfer from alternative approaches, promoting development of new skills and adapted application of existing skills in IPT trainees.
Who is this course suitable for? This course is suitable for IPT Practitioners who have completed practitioner level B accreditation and have registered with IPT UK (application form can be downloaded from cover page). Practitioners must have completed at least four IPT cases under accreditation level supervision, but it is recommended that further casework is completed to consolidate practise skills before applying for advanced training. A supervisor statement (the supervisor that approved your Level B IPT Practitioner Accreditation) must be accompanied with the application form. Qualified IPT supervisors are also welcome to attend to develop competence in using an competency based protocol for IPT supervision or to become accredited as an IAPT IPT supervisor.
Course Content:
To develop advanced practical skills in delivering IPT.
To develop advanced skills in IPT case formulation and conceptualization as a basis for self-assessment and peer supervision.
To develop an understanding of the competency framework for IPT and its application in clinical supervision.
To provide a framework for clinical practice and supervision in IPT that is in accordance with IPTUK standards and IPT Supervisor competencies.
To develop practical competencies in using the IPT competency framework to supervise Interpersonal Psychotherapy and integrate with generic competencies in delivering and supervising psychological therapy
To contribute in part to completion of IPT UK accreditation as an IPT supervisor (including in an IAPT setting).
Please note: The course fee of for the training days does not include the supervision and moderation required to complete the training cases and accreditation at Level D in supervision). Supervision costs in order to complete the Accreditation and advance onto Level D needs to be organized independently and details of Accredited IPT UK Supervisors can be found on the IPT UK website. Dr Marie Wardle – Programme Director for IPT West Midlands Marie has worked for Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) for over 20 years in various clinical settings, including secondary care services, community mental health teams, primary care services and IAPT. She is the founder of IPT West Midlands and an IPT-UK approved trainer. Originally trained as an integrative psychotherapist and clinical supervisor, studying at the University of Manchester (School of Education), Liverpool and Chester. She has undertaken a 3 year curriculum course in Psychiatry (MRCpsych) at the Teaching Hospital in North Staffs. and has led on various programmes in mental health, lecturing and supervising on MRCpsych programmes, and other organizations. Her recent research interests are in lifestyle medicine and developing courses in this growing field.
Lorraine Manley - IPT UK Practitioner and Supervisor Lorraine is an accredited IPT UK Trainer, Supervisor and Practitioner. She qualified with a degree in Person-Centred Therapy and a Masters in Counselling Studies from the University of Liverpool. Lorraine has worked for MPFT for nearly 20 years in various clinical settings across the Trust as a Supervisor, IPT therapist and Counsellor. Her previous working experience has included; working for Shropshire Council Youth Services offering counselling to children and young people, for the Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS FT providing counselling and CBT for adult services and Consultant Psychotherapist for Cheshire East CMHT Psychology Department, offering High-Intensity step 4 CBT and Psychotherapy. She has also spent 16 years volunteering and offering her services as a Supervisor for Shropshire Cruse Bereavement Services.
Heather Morgan - IPT UK Practitioner and Supervisor Heather is an accredited IPT UK Practitioner and Supervisor and is employed with Midlands Partnership Foundation Trust. She has worked with the Trust for 16 years as a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor. She has many years’ experience working in different mental health sectors with previous roles in independent organisations including Alcohol Services and Employee Assistance Programmes. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Podiatric Medicine (University of Westminster), a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Supervision and MA in Counselling Studies (University of Chester).
