Supervisor training: Surrey

IPT Supervisor Training (Level D)

Location: University of Surrey, Guildford, UK
Date: TBC
Course Leader: Dr Susan Howard, Consultant Clinical Psychologist; Chair, IPTUK Training Committee
Course Fees: £800

The Course
Our four day Supervisor Training Course is aimed at practitioners and senior practitioners who have been approved for supervisor training. It can be undertaken during or after cases 5 and 6. The objective of Supervisor training is to develop the specific competencies required to supervise the development of IPT skills in both trainee and qualified IPT practitioners.

Teaching methods include didactic presentations, small group work and the detailed examination and ratings of cases, using both written and audio material. Workshops include the supervision of Theory-practice linking; the supervision of Formulation and developing the supervisory relationship. This course qualifies participants to commence the practical part of the supervisor training in IPT – supervision of clinical practice under supervision.

The Surrey-Sussex IPT Centre is unique in the UK in that its sole purpose is to develop and deliver high quality IPT training. All IPT Centre courses are taught using attachment theory as the core psychological model for understanding the development and maintenance of mental health difficulties as well as informing client needs and therapeutic interventions.

Who is the course suitable for?
Applicants for this course are required to have a generic training in IPT and at least 12 months experience of clinical supervision. For those with supervisory experience but who don’t have previous supervisor training the IPT Centre can provide a two day generic supervisor training. Candidates must also have a reference from their supervisor confirming that their skills and knowledge in IPT are commensurate with the requirements of becoming a supervisor. Applicants may use the IPT Centre Practitioner Competency Rating Form to support their application (contact ipt@surrey.ac.uk for a form).

Supervision of Supervision
The course provides the first stage in working towards becoming an IPTUK Accredited IPT Supervisor. Completion of Supervisor training requires the candidate to undertake the supervision of two cases under supervision with an IPTUK accredited Supervising Supervisor and to complete a reflective account of the process of becoming an IPT supervisor. The IPT Centre can arrange for supervision, which can be provided face to face or remotely eg telephone or Skype. Please see our website www.surrey.ac.uk/ipt for arrangements and fees for supervision of supervision.
