Race and Culture Special Interest Group Meeting - Date TBC

Title:  The Race and Culture SIG -  working together to fulfil our purpose
You are invited to join with us as part of the Race and Culture Special Interest Group in a meeting to gather your input, with respect to topics that you would like to see hosted by this group over the next 12 months.

This meeting is hosted jointly by Alicia Clarke and Ellen Heralall and we are hoping that all IPT UK members feel welcome to join in and contribute.

REPRESENTATION MATTERS:
Race and Culture SIG and IPT UK Executive Consultation event:
Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism in IPT UK

Picture

At the National meeting in November, Yvonne Hemmings gave a presentation on ‘Equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism’ within IPT UK, examining a demographic snapshot of IPT UK members (see here to view: IPT UK National Meeting November 2021: Introduction and Yvonne Hemmings presenting IPT UK Demographic Survey (vimeo.com)).
This study’s findings suggested a ‘glass ceiling’ for IPT UK members from Black, Asian and mixed ethnic groups trying to progress through the levels of accreditation in IPT UK compared to members from white ethnic groups.
As a membership we are asked to consider the questions:
  • What are the barriers for clinicians from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups in progressing through accreditation levels within IPT UK at the same rate as clinicians from white ethnic groups and what do we need to do to ensure equity?
  • Where and how does systemic racism operate in IPT UK and what anti-racist action should we take?
  • We currently operate with a white leadership, many of whom have been around for a number of years.  How can we encourage greater engagement between the Executive and membership in the process of nomination and elections, to ensure better representation within our leadership in the future?
To support us to consider these questions, and others you may be asking in relation to this topic, Yvonne Hemmings (Joint IAPT Lead, IPT UK) and Alicia Clarke (Chair, Race and Culture SIG, IPT UK) are co-hosting a membership wide consultation event.
We would love to see you there!

The Importance of Session 0 in South East Asian Cultures
What do we mean when we say ‘South East Asian communities?’  How can some understanding of these cultures help our IPT practice?  Why do we think that Session 0 is important in working in IPT with South East Asian Cultures?
On 10th March 2022 @ 09:15, the Race & Culture SIG held a 45 minute session to discuss this content led by Atreyee Goswami, Counsellor & IPT Practitioner.

On Thursday 9th September, 2021, Alicia Clarke hosted an IPT UK SIG event for Race & Culture focusing on depression within the Gypsy and Traveller community.

The meeting began with introductions followed by an informative and emotive presentation by Rachael and Bernard from Leeds Gate, Gypsy & Traveller Exchange, which  is available to view. Please click here.

It was wonderful to see so many IPT UK members participating at the meeting and we look forward to seeing you at the next one.

Race & Culture Special Interest Group meeting 5.3.21

On Friday 5th March, 2021, Alicia Clarke hosted the first IPT UK Race & Culture special interest group. The meeting was the third in a series of meetings that have recently been exploring cultural considerations in psychotherapy.

The Zoom meeting was attended by 37 IPT UK members and was an exciting opportunity for members to meet in one of four break-out rooms:
  • Asia room
  • Africa and the Caribbean room
  • European room
  • Gypsy and Traveller room
Although the meeting was brief,  there was a great deal of positive feedback with plenty of enthusiasm to attend meetings addressing these topics further.
If you have any strong interest in any of the above 4 areas, please email Alicia Clarke via contact@iptuk.net
All feedback, suggestions, ideas and comments are welcome.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.
