PSA Consultation Sessions 12th Feb & 10th March
Thank you to everyone who attended these two thoughtful and informative sessions regarding the IPT UK PSA application process. Please see below for the transcripts of each meeting. Recordings to follow.
PSA CONSULTATION FAQ’s What does PSA accreditation mean for IPT UK? Gaining accreditation from the PSA will validate the credibility of IPT UK as a professional body. It confirms that IPT UK meets the highest standards of governance, accountability and professional practice. This recognition ensures that we adhere to best practice, offering our members the credibility they deserve within the psychotherapy community.
Are we definitely going ahead with the PSA accreditation? The decision to move forward with the PSA application depends on a number of factors, including the results of the consultation with our members, associated costs and potential benefits it could bring. While we are committed to exploring this opportunity, the final decision will be based on whether it aligns with the best interests of IPT UK and our members.
Who will get to decide and why? The decision will ultimately be made by the Executive Committee, Training Committee, Regional Reps and SIG Leads who will vote on this on March 25th. They are responsible for evaluating all feedback, consulting results and the long-term benefits of accreditation. Their goal is to ensure that the decision is in the best interest of IPT UK and its members. It Is important that we connect with the wider membership and we encourage everyone to complete the consultation form.
Will it cost me more? At present, there are no immediate plans to increase membership fees specifically due to PSA accreditation. However, we are mindful of the costs associated with the accreditation process. We are committed to keeping membership fees reasonable and transparent. Any future changes to fees will be clearly communicated to members in advance. We are open to exploring options of levels of membership and fee structures, which will be carefully considered as part of this process. We would also explore options for those wanting to maintain membership with other professional bodies in order to keep costs as low as possible.
Will there be different membership levels This is something we are already considering and anticipate that different membership levels will recognise varying degrees of experience and professional development amongst members. These levels will reflect members’ qualifications and involvement, ensuring they are appropriately acknowledged and supported. As part of this process we will also explore different fee structures.
Will members get more value for their money with PSA accreditation?Yes, members will benefit from the added credibility and recognition that PSA accreditation brings. This accreditation opens doors for wider recognition within the professional community, enhances opportunities for networking, and strengthens the reputation of IPT UK and its members. Additionally, members will have the assurance that they belong to an accredited professional body that upholds the highest standards.
Will PSA accreditation increase the accreditation standards for members? Yes, PSA accreditation will raise the bar for all members by ensuring that IPT UK adheres to rigorous standards in terms of professional conduct, training and ethics. While this won’t drastically alter the accreditation process, it will ensure that members are continually operating at a high standard, in line with the expectations of the PSA. This is designed to provide more robust support and recognition for our members.
Who decides changes in training routes? The Training Committee and Executive Committee will continue to be responsible for deciding on any changes to training routes, including for those without a core profession. They will assess and determine appropriate pathways to ensure the standards and requirements of the training remain rigorous and relevant.
When will it happen? The first stage which involved the completion of Standard One Assessment, took approximately a year to complete. We have received valuable feedback from the PSA which we are implementing to enhance the efficiency and standards of IPT UK. The consultation period will run until the 11th March with the Executive Committee meeting on 25th March to make the final decision. Members will be informed of the outcome as soon as possible after this date.
The second stage is expected to take longer due to the significant amount of work required to meet the necessary standards, so we anticipate that the process may not be completed until 2026. To support this effort, IPT UK has introduced a new role on the Executive Committee – Professional Standards Lead. Regardless of the outcome of the consultation, IPT UK is committed to improving standards within the organisation to benefit all members.
Will there be any information sessions during the consultation? Yes, we plan to hold information sessions during the consultation period to provide an open forum for discussion. These sessions will count towards CPD and will allow members to ask questions, learn more, share thoughts and gain clarity on progressing to the next stage of the application.
We would love to see you on Wednesday, 12th Feb at 10am, OR Monday, 10th March at 12 noon.
