Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is an evidence-based, time-limited, diagnosis-targeted, manualized treatment for major depression and other psychiatric disorders in adolescents and adults.
Therapists help patients to solve an interpersonal crisis as a way of both improving their lives and relieving their symptoms.
IPT helps patients to understand their emotions as social signals, to use this understanding to improve interpersonal situations, and to mobilize social supports. Its success in a series of research studies has led to its inclusion in numerous national and international treatment guidelines.

The new NICE guidelines for depression have been launched and can be accessed here.

At IPT UK we welcome this guidance and the greater inclusion of individual choice and shared decision making in guiding treatment than was present in earlier draft versions of the document. We are disappointed in some of the methodology underpinning the guidance development (please see IPT UK's response to the draft NICE guidelines here), which led to a significant amount of robust IPT efficacy research not meeting rigid inclusion criteria for consideration by NICE.

However, we are pleased to note that IPT is included as a first line intervention for a new episode of less severe depression where NICE specifically highlight the use of 8 (IPT-Brief) to 16 session models (traditional IPT for adult depression).  We are in discussion with our Training Committee regarding the potential for future CPD events around protocols for IPT-Brief identifying when this may be more appropriate than the traditional 16 session IPT model, to support our membership in applying this guideline.

There are a total of 11 interventions named as first line interventions for less severe depression, ordering based on the committees' interpretations of clinical and cost effectiveness, with IPT being listed as 8th in consideration.  Many of the interventions listed before IPT are low intensity e.g., self-help, or group interventions, which may not be acceptable for many individuals, but are more "cost effective" than individual therapy. We strongly encourage our membership to adhere to recommendations of treatment choices being underpinned by shared decisions based on clinical needs and preferences.

In treatment of a first episode of more severe depression, again IPT is listed as one of the 10 recommended first line interventions, listed as 8th based on the committee's interpretation of clinical and cost effectiveness. This is based on the tradition 16 session adult IPT model for depression.

While we are disappointed in the positioning of IPT in the clinical committee's interpretations of clinical and cost effectiveness, we recognise IPT's continued position as a first line intervention for depression in adults and once again wish to highlight recommendation to match treatment choice to "clinical need and preference" to "support the person's choice".

The new guidance reinforces the importance of a range of evidence-based treatment approaches being available within mental health services to inform and support individual treatment choice, and a range of considerations for second line interventions if required.

Details of therapy-based outcome rates in IAPT services in England 2020-2021 are available here.

IPT UK MEMBERSHIP NEWS!
IPT UK are extremely excited and proud to announce that we are able to now offer a further route to practice. We are introducing a route for KSA trainees to achieve registration that will enable them to practice IPT with IPT UK Organisation membership.

Historically, trainees that do not have a core profession were unable to achieve any form of registration in order to practise as a recognised IPT UK member. Certain training institutions will be able to offer a programme of training that will culminate in the trainee becoming an Organisation Member with the benefits of IPT UK membership. As long as they are employed by an organisation that is responsible for their practice (safe guarding, indemnity etc), they will be able to practice IPT/IPT-A.

IPT UK Membership options now include the following

REPRESENTATION MATTERS:
Race and Culture SIG and IPT UK Executive Consultation event:
Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism in IPT UK

Picture
Thursday 16th June 9am to 10.30 am via Zoom - ALL IPT UK MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO JOIN:
IPT UK Admin is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
Topic: Representation Matters: Race and Culture SIG and IPT UK Executive Consultation event: Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism in IPT UK
Time: Jun 9, 2022 09:00 AM London
Join Zoom Meeting
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81968981389?pwd=cnNDUWxqdGl1NUNsdDE3RlRNWmh1UT09
Meeting ID: 819 6898 1389
Passcode: 257583

At the National meeting in November, Yvonne Hemmings gave a presentation on ‘Equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism’ within IPT UK, examining a demographic snapshot of IPT UK members (see here to view: IPT UK National Meeting November 2021: Introduction and Yvonne Hemmings presenting IPT UK Demographic Survey (vimeo.com)).
This study’s findings suggested a ‘glass ceiling’ for IPT UK members from Black, Asian and mixed ethnic groups trying to progress through the levels of accreditation in IPT UK compared to members from white ethnic groups.
As a membership we are asked to consider the questions:
  • What are the barriers for clinicians from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups in progressing through accreditation levels within IPT UK at the same rate as clinicians from white ethnic groups and what do we need to do to ensure equity?
  • Where and how does systemic racism operate in IPT UK and what anti-racist action should we take?
  • We currently operate with a white leadership, many of whom have been around for a number of years.  How can we encourage greater engagement between the Executive and membership in the process of nomination and elections, to ensure better representation within our leadership in the future?
To support us to consider these questions, and others you may be asking in relation to this topic, Yvonne Hemmings (Joint IAPT Lead, IPT UK) and Alicia Clarke (Chair, Race and Culture SIG, IPT UK) are co-hosting a membership wide consultation event.
We would love to see you there!

How to Support Ukraine now from Vitalii Klymchuk

Dear colleagues, writing you this letter, as many of you want to support Ukraine now.

24th of February I woke up near 4 a.m. because of the explosion near my house. We live between the military airport and proving ground, so used to such kinds of sounds. But this was different. Viktoria, my wife, opened FB and said that war had begun, and we were under attack. All necessary things were already prepared, just in the case. So, we quickly picked up rests, woke our son, called parents and made emergency plans.
My first thought was about the safety of my family, so I planned to move them as far as possible, make them safe, and then return to fight by all means. All road we argued about my returning and tried to make plans. We saw the endless column of the cars moving to the safe regions, saw the vehicles moved backwards with supplies and reinforcement, and saw faces of territorial defence on the block posts. It was frightening and inspiring at the same time.
We made it to Lviv, had a short sleep at night, were in the shelter from air attacks a few times, and moved further. We were lucky to rent the hotel room, as there were no free places around. Now hotels owners accept all people and let them stay in the schools, private houses etc. After sheltering the families, many men came back to resist, fight, join volunteers, or help with the transportation of supplies.
Now we are waiting for the call to the borders to transfer medical and protection supplies further. Because wife and son refuse to leave me, we will do it together. While waiting, we are working on redirection of the "Mental Health for Ukraine Project" activities from developmental to MHPSS scheme, preparing and sharing a recommendation on Psychological First Aid, children's psychological safety, and support for people with mental disorders.
Thank you on behalf of the Ukrainian mental health professionals for all your support in training, education, guides etc. But for now, it is not so urgent, we have been in the state of war for more than eight years, and all guides are available, PFA and other trainers are prepared and ready to work, volunteer helplines are working, and psychologists are on call in the hospitals and other places. All of it happened because of your support and training during all these years. And your education and training will be for sure in need in the future when the hot situation is in the past.

What are the needs for now?

Direct providing of supplies will be a challenging task. A lot of needs, from the tourniquets to protection equipment. There are such steps that you can apply for helping us.

1.     Make donations directly to the Ukrainian government on the particular accounts dedicated to the support of the Ukrainian army. Here you can find account numbers in your currency: https://bank.gov.ua/ua/news/all/natsionalniy-bank-vidkriv-spetsrahunok-dlya-zboru-koshtiv-na-potrebi-armiyi
2.     If you have some personal restrictions in support of armed forces, you can donate to the reliable charitable fund "Povernys zhyvym" ("Come back alive"). Your donation will be used to buy the protection and medical supplies. Instruction on the donation you can make here: https://savelife.in.ua/en/donate/
3.     Even a small donation, multiplied by the number of supporters, will make a difference. So please, share this letter with your colleagues, friends, other people that you can outreach, share on FB or other media etc., even if you yourselves are not ready to donate directly.
4.     Please make the record in this depersonalized form (https://forms.gle/byRRT1SMbVwgcsUa9). You will be asked just to enter your country and the sum of your donation. No other information will be requested.
5.     Please make posts about the situation and share them with the world about the invaders' crimes.

Thank you, all my friends and colleagues! Together we stand, together we win!

Update – IPT UK ANTI RACISM STRATEGY (March 2021)
Since last November, IPT UK have begun an anti-racism strategy project. This is split between the Executive Committee and the Training Committee. The Exec are focusing on how IPT UK as an organisation can better pro-actively promote anti-racism while the Training Committee are tasked with incorporating and updating this into the IPT training.
Our first action as an Executive, has been to create an Equality & Diversity Form to collate data from our membership to better understand how it is made up. This form will be sent to you to complete. On its return to us, we will anonymize the data and keep it securely within the guidelines of GDPR. Going forward, we will be deploying this form with your accreditation and reaccreditation applications. The form will then be uncoupled from your records.

Help Us Help You – Mental Health
Public Health England have announced that the NHS is launching its first national campaign on mental health services on 17 November 2020. There has never been a more important time to look after the mental health of the nation – and they want to remind everyone that the NHS is here for mental health, even during the pandemic.

Help Us Help You – Mental Health is a two-month campaign aiming at increasing awareness of NHS talking therapies services (IAPT). It will encourage adults with mental health issues to seek help and consider accessing NHS talking therapy via their GP or through self-referral. It will have a specific focus on BAME groups and people struggling with unemployment.

Mental health is a top priority of the NHS, and we count on your support to promote the campaign. The campaign resources can be accessed and downloaded for free here.
The ISIPT Biennial Meeting will return on 3-6th November 2021
"Save the dates! Start to think about assembling your symposia, workshops, posters, and oral presentations for submission. An all-star Scientific Program Committee line-up will be ready to review them.
Because of Covid-19, this will be a purely virtual meeting. We regret that we won't be able to mingle in person, but we will do all we can to make this meeting as interpersonal and lively as possible. And the virtual format will present some advantages in viewing flexibility. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
Look for updates on the website.  We look forward to (virtually) seeing you there!"

Research Lead Election Outcome
As you will be aware, we recently ran the second election for the Research Lead post, which sits on the IPT UK Executive Committee. We are delighted to say that the number of votes cast during this election re-run increased by 15% from the first run. For this we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that took the time to vote again, as well as to those who took the opportunity to vote this time having missed their chance the first time round.

Now that the election is closed, we are pleased to announce that Paul Wilkinson and Fiona Duffy have been successful in their bid to run as a team. Paul and Fiona received 78% of the votes, 50% more votes than any individual or combined set of nominees received last time, and only 8 votes fewer than the number cast in total across all candidates last time! We are sure you will join us in offering our congratulations to them both. Paul and Fiona will now join the Executive Committee as joint IPT UK Research Leads.

As an organisation, we are very much looking forward to working with Paul and Fiona on developing the place of research in IPT UK.
UPDATE November 2020 - Paul has stepped down from his role with IPT UK. We wish him luck in his new venture.

A new book by Roslyn Law
IPT UK is delighted to announce the release of Dr Roslyn Law’s new book, Defeating Teenage Depression – getting there together. The book is an accessible guide to combating depression for teenagers, using Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Adolescents (IPT-A) and is available from little, brown book group here.

This practical guide uses techniques based on Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Adolescents (IPT-A) which has been used to help children and young people with depression around the world. IPT-A helps them to develop their own story of what is happening in their life so that they can understand their depression and how to get out of it.

This is Roslyn’s second book, having published the effective Defeating Depression, a practical IPT based self-help book for adults, in 2013.

IPT UK Membership
We are delighted to introduce to you a new members’ area of the website.

Following discussions at the IPT UK meeting in November 2013, the decision was made to charge individuals to become members of IPT UK. This has allowed us to create a bespoke members’ area filled with useful resources for IPT trainees, practitioners and supervisors. This includes the latest IPT related news, many resources, from abstracts of the most informative journal articles to presentations from conferences and videos. The members’ area also contains minutes from IPT UK meetings to keep you up to date with the organisation nationally, and any job vacancies currently available.

To add to this, we are also offering members the opportunity to promote themselves as IPT practitioners and supervisors under our ‘Find a therapist’ button on the website. We hope that this will prove popular and make life simpler when searching for supervisors or practitioners. Members who select this option will be able to list their geographical region, email and phone number.

For individuals there are three membership packages:
1.     Trainees - for individuals who have attended their 5 days training and are working towards practitioner status. There will be no charge for trainees to access the members’ area as they complete their preparation to become IPT practitioners.
2.     Member Basic - for accredited practitioners and supervisors wishing to access the members’ area. The annual fee for this will be £75.
3.     Member Plus - for accredited practitioners and supervisors wishing to promote themselves on the IPT UK website. The annual fee for this will be £100.

In order to become a member of IPT UK please complete the form below by clicking here. If you would prefer to pay by standing order, please get in touch and we can arrange this. Your membership will not be activated until we have received payment.

Once registered you will receive an email with a password to the member’s area of the website. This will be sent out within 5 working days of your registration.
